The beginning of the year 2000 and a new millennium saw Auckland City join the global celebrations of the biggest New Year ever.

The year got off to a fantastic start for Auckland City when Team New Zealand defended the America's Cup on home ground in Auckland's harbour. In February Team New Zealand was successful in it's defence and retained the America's cup.

In October the lone Monterey pine that sits on top of One Tree Hill, and has become an icon of the Auckland skyscape was felled due to ill health. The pine had suffered two attacks in the last decade that shortened the 125 year old pine's lifespan.
