The 1990s, the last decade of the millennium. Auckland, along with
the rest of New Zealand celebrated 150 years since the signing of
the treaty.
1990
Auckland holds the Commonwealth Games.
1992
The Mercury Theatre closes down
1993
The first Pasifika festival of the South Pacific culture is held at Western Springs. The one day event attracts 30,000 people.
1994
5 May The premiere of Once Were Warriors was held in Auckland City.
1995
Team New Zealand arrived home to a parade down Queen Street after winning the world's oldest sporting trophy - the America's Cup.
1996
Opera in the Park is first held. Featuring Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, the event held in the Auckland Domain attracts 300,000 people. The Park concerts become a regular event.
1997
Auckland's Sky Tower was officially opened. At 328 metres, it was the 12th tallest building in the world and the tallest in the Southern Hemisphere.
1999
Auckland plays host to the America's Cup which sees major changes to the waterfront area of Auckland City. |
