1975
The first Round the Bays run is held. Sponsored by the Auckland Star, the event attracts 30,000 people. The run becomes a popular annual fixture in Auckland.

1977
5 January Bastion Point was occupied by a group of Ngati Whatua activists. The occupation was a result of the Government's plans to sell the land for housing. It was occupied for 506 days and when the activists were removed it they seemed to have been defeated, instead in 1987 the land was returned to the Ngati Whatua and remains undeveloped today.
