The 1970's saw many protests on the streets of Auckland. A social
conscience had emerged out of the 1960's.
Auckland became the Pacific's largest Polynesian city. From late 1976 the Government instigated the famous dawn raids on the homes of Pacific Island families searching for overstayers.
1971
Colonel Sanders opens his first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Royal Oak. Three years later Pizza Hut opens in New Lynn.
1975
The first Round the Bays run is held. Sponsored by the Auckland Star, the event attracts 30,000 people. The run becomes a popular annual fixture in Auckland.
1976
The first issue of magazine Art New Zealand is published in Auckland. It is still going today.
1977
5 January Bastion Point was occupied by a group of Ngati Whatua activists. The occupation was a result of the Government's plans to sell the land for housing. It was occupied for 506 days and when the activists were removed it they seemed to have been defeated, instead in 1987 the land was returned to the Ngati Whatua and remains undeveloped today. |
