The Swinging 60's began with prosperity in the air, the decade
had a politcal slant to it. As a nation the National Governement
and Keith Holyoake dominated politics.
1964
The Waverley Hotel was demolished to make way for the new South Pacific Hotel known today as the Park Royal. The Fab Four played to a packed house at the Town Hall.
1966
Mangere Airport is renamed Auckland International airport and is officially opened by the Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson.
Auckland's population reaches half a million people.
1967
Decimal currency arrived in New Zealand.
1968
Construction of the Downtown Centre and QEII Square began.
1969
Auckland's bush-filled Grafton Gully becomes the route of an exit from the Southern Motorway. The new road would pass beneath the 59-year-old Grafton Bridge and then under Symonds Street to connect with Wellesley Street East. The four lane extensions on the Harbour Bridge were opened. |
