In the 1930's Auckland was feeling the full effect of a world wide
Depression. The City suffered a loss of population due to the job
losses and riots occured in the main streets. The effects of the
Depression lasted until the next World War.
1930
The Auckland Railway Station was opened.
1931
12 September The inaugural Bledisloe cup match was played between Australia and New Zealand at Eden Park on the edge of Auckland City. 15,000 people watched the game from the stands and the All Blacks won 20-13.
1932
Hundreds of umemployed people rioted in Queen Street for more than two hours, the riots started after several hundred public servants march to the Town Hall to protest against proposed wage cuts,
1933
A specifically and distinctively New Zealand coinage was introduced.Prior to this New Zealand had used British coins.
1936
The National Art Gallery and the Dominion Musuem were opened in their new building, designed by WH Gummer
29 October New Zealand's first commercial radio station started broadcasting from above a music shop in Karangahape road. The station was 1ZB
1939
3 September New Zealand joined Britain, Australia, France, and India in declaring war on Germany. |
