1881 The stonewalls of the Barracks were demolished as the Maori were no longer seen as a threat to the city. A small section of this wall still stands today in the University of Auckland grounds. 1884 August 11th The first horse drawn Trams were put into service. They went from the Waitemata Hotel near Queen Street to the Ponsonby Reservoir and cost 3 pence. 1885 June 4th - the foundation stone of the Library and Art Gallery was laid.
